Maintenance of Dehumidifier.

In this article we are going to explore how to do maintenance of home dehumidifier and portable industrial dehumidifiers. Dehumidifier is device which runs continuously to remove humidity from inlet air and give dry air out. In this process all parts of dehumidifiers are actively use continuously. Regular maintenance is must to address wear and tear of different parts of dehumidifier. To avoid regular maintenance or damage of unit, first of all it should be installed properly and used as mention by manufacturer. All caution regarding installation and maintenance of industrial dehumidifiers one should take into considerations. Some of general cautions list is as follow:

Some of cautions are as follow:

  1. do not install unit on uneven surface. This will cause shaking, noise and water leakage.
  2. Clearance should be at least 20 cm from all side for free intake/outlet of air and heat dissipation. If you are using dehumidifier for drying of laundry of wall then keep minimum clearance of at least 50cm.

3. Keep machine away form reach of children. I will be dangerous to insert anything into the machine.

4. Always keep machine from sources of heat like sunlight, heater, gas etc.

5. To increase efficiency please close all windows and door while machine is operating.

6. Do not bug oil, spray paint or any flammable near dehumidifier unit. It can cause fire.

7. If you are using hose connection for continuous drainage then make sure that pipe connected tightly to hose and it should have any folding and should have slope.

Maintenance of Humidity control unit.

Regular maintenance of unit not only increase efficiency of unit but also its life. It is very important that before starting any maintenance work, please unplug unit from power socket. Some of general maintenance tips are as follow:

  1. Unplug unit from power socket.
  2. Cleaning of Filter: Most of units provided with washable air filter. You can easily remove these filter and clean it by vacuum cleaner or if it is washable filter then it can be clean under tab water. regular cleaning of filter is very important for clean and healthy air.
  3. If dehumidifier is dirty externally then you can clean it with help of half dried cloth.
  4. Water tank should be clean with dry cloth properly. If water kept in tank for long time without using dehumidifier then it can create even mold. Hence if dehumidifier not in use then make sure that water tank is dry.
  5. For cleaning of blades, evaporative and heating coil you need to have step by step procedure to access these parts. Otherwise take help of ac technicians to access these part for cleaning.

We have discussed different types of dehumidification system in our previous articles. Dehumidifier can potable, ceiling mount, floor mount, wall mount type. And these type of dehumidifier can be ducted or non ducted type based on facility available in dehumidifier to connect with air conditioner duct or not. There are advantages and disadvantage of ducted dehumidifiers. Ducted unit generally consist of main unit and controller. Controller generally wall  mount one with which user can set required humidity, switch on/off, set timer etc. In some cased Ducted probe type controller also use. Main unit consists of evaporator and condenser coil for dehumidification with inlet and outlet duct. These units has necessary arrangement to wall mount our ceiling mount. There are many advantages of ducted unit than portable one. First one is that ducted unit saves space since it is generally wall mount and ceiling mount unlike an portable dehumidifiers. Secondly Since it is mount above fall ceiling or outer wall, it gives quite operation than portable unit. Fully automatic operation is one of major advantages. since Ducted unit connected to central duct it easily dehumidify air to set level quickly & automatically whenever humidity level more than set level.

Type of installation of Ducted dehumidification system.

There are different way of connecting small ducted dehumidifier with your air conditioner Ducts. Some of few methods are as follow:

A) Main Return to Main Return Duct: In this configuration unit connected in parallel to main return duct. Dehumidifiers take air  from main return duct, dehumidify it and through dry air through it’s outlet duct main return duct.

B) Main Return to Main Supply Duct: In this configuration unit connected in parallel air conditioner unit. Dehumidifiers take air  from main return duct, dehumidify it and through dry air through it’s outlet duct main supply duct.

D) Dedicated return to Main Return: In configuration inlet of dehumidifier connected with dedicated return duct and outlet connected to main return duct.

E) Un ducted: In this configuration dehumidification unit not connected to any duct. It simply wall mounted or ceiling suspended in space which need to be dehumidify.

It is always a big challenge for users like us to select capacity of dehumidifier for our home. Once we decided to go for new dehumidifier unit then we always faced with common question of which capacity. In this article we will try to understand how to decide capacity and airflow of portable dehumidifier for home.

What home dehumidifiers should have?

Extraction capacity generally mentioned in terms of liter/day or pints/day. It is nothing but maximum amount of water that dehumidifier can extract from air in one day. Air flow volume is important to consider since moisture from air will get extracted only if air passes through dehumidifier. More the Air flow, more air will pass through dehumidifier and moisture level from air will come down quickly. Air flow volume mentioned in terms of Cubic Feet per Minutes (CFM).

Selecting Liter/day Dehumidifier Size.

As long as dehumidifier for home is concerned, Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) has made job very easy.  AHAM offered easiest dehumidifier buying guide. AHAM has recommended capacity of dehumidifier depending on size of room and humidity level in room. Capacity of dehumidifier is directly proportional to humidity level in room and size of room. is Depending on level of humidity and its symptoms AHAM divided area in following four types:

1) Extremely Wet Area: Areas with extremely high humidity level with Wet Floors and High-Load Conditions.

2) Very Wet Area: Areas with high humidity which tends to condensation water drops formation on walls and seepage on walls.

3) Very Damp Area: Common symptoms of these areas are bad odour from carpet, clothing, sofa and damp spot of walls.

4) Moderately Damp Area: In such areas you feel uncomfortable and with smell.

 

Depending on Humidity levels (as mentioned above) and size of room, AHAM offered following guideline to select size of dehumidifier.

 Selecting Air flow volume for dehumidifiers.

CFM Air flow volume needed in room is decided with help of square foot area of room and humidity level in room. Air flow volume is directly proportional to square feet area of room and humidity level in room. Square feet area of room determines how much air should pass through dehumidifier while humidity level in room determines how many times this air should pass through unit in hour. This term is denoted as ACH or air changing per hour.

Air flow volume in CFM can obtain by multiplying square foot area of room and recommended ACH for that room. Recommended ACH from different areas as follow:

1) For Extremely wet area: These are areas where humidity level in range of 90% to 100% RH. Recommended ACH is 6.

2) For Very wet area: These are areas where humidity level in range of 80% to 90% RH. Recommended ACH is 5.

3) For Very Damp area: These are areas where humidity level in range of 70% to 80% RH. Recommended ACH is 4.

4) For Damp area: These are areas where humidity level in range of 60% to 70% RH. Recommended ACH is 3.

By multiplying Area of room in square feet to Recommended ACH, one can get Air flow Volume for Dehumidifier.
