• The reactivation exhaust duct must exit to atmosphere outside the cold room — not into an antechamber, not into the loading area, not into any space that connects to the cold room interior. If this exhaust is not properly routed, the moisture extracted from the cold room air is simply re-introduced nearby and re-infiltrates through the same gaps and door openings.
• For walk-in chillers and smaller cold rooms, the dehumidifier is typically installed in or immediately adjacent to the cold room, with the process air inlet drawing cold room air directly and the dry air outlet discharging back into the cold room. The cold room humidity problem has a specific characteristic that makes it different from most other dehumidifier applications: when the solution is wrong, it looks like it might be working. A refrigerant unit installed in a cold room runs, makes noise, and appears to be doing something — but below 15°C it is not actually extracting moisture. The only humidity extraction mechanism that functions across the full cold room temperature range — from -30°C chilled air to +35°C ambient. Refrigerant units are not an option below 15°C.
Specify units rated for the lowest temperature in your facility, not average operating conditions. A unit rated to 0°C will fail in a -18°C freezer room during defrost cycling when temperature momentarily rises.
The dry cold air returns to the cold room; the moisture-laden reactivation air is vented outside. These must be kept completely separate — any mixing defeats the purpose of the unit.
Cold storage environments — particularly for food and pharmaceutical products — require materials that can withstand cleaning chemicals, condensate exposure, and the temperature cycling .
The unit must connect to ducting that takes the reactivation exhaust to atmosphere outside the cold room. Verify this is feasible in your specific facility layout to install short duct before selecting a unit.
