A ducted dehumidifier can often found at pool rooms and basement. Compared to the portable unit, a duct mounted dehumidifier is superior. Large spaces need high capacity units like an inline dehumidifier. In some instances, it also called a whole-house dehumidifier. In this article, we will discuss duct type dehumidifiers in detail.
Duct units are fully automatic in operation. Once it fixed, it will reduce humidity itself. It does not need maintenance every day like a portable unit. In short, to dehumidify large space, we should use a ducted unit. In contrast, for a single room, a mobile s can use.
Ducted dehumidifiers.
The ducted unit generally consists of the main unit and controller. Often controller is wall mount type. But, in some cases ducted probe controller also used. From the controller, the user can switch on or off the unit and set parameters. The main system consists of coils and compressors for dehumidification. The central part is the part where actual moisture removed from the air.
Inlet duct equipped with filter. Thus, the ducted dehumidifier also acts as a basic air purifier. There are many advantages of duct mounted dehumidifier over a portable one.
Advantages of a ducted dehumidifier.
First and foremost, inline dehumidifier available with high capacity. It can include a bigger compressor and coils. Thus, it is available up to a rating of 1200 liters per day. For the given capacity, the physical size of the duct unit smaller than portable. Also, most of the ducted dehumidifier can install above a ceiling or wall mount. Hence, it saves space inside the room.
Saving space is vital for indoor pool rooms. To remove moisture, air needs to pass over coils of duct mounted dehumidifier. The airflow capacity of the unit decides the amount of air that can process by the system. In other words, large airflow capacity means to handle more air at one time. In consequence, it can serve a larger area. The duct unit can have bigger fans and coils. As a result, it can have a higher airflow.
Disadvantages of duct mounted dehumidifier.
Some of the cons are as follow:
- Since the ducted dehumidifier has high airflow, it sometimes louder. But, we can reduce this sound with a muffler kit.
- These units are more costly than other types of systems.
- Once it fixed, it cannot use for other places like the mobile unit.
- Installation of duct mount dehumidifier needs an expert. Thus, it will mount your cost. In the same vein, maintenance also needs trained staff.
A ducted dehumidifier installation.
There are different ways of connecting the small duct unit with your air conditioner. Some of the few methods are as follow:
Inline dehumidifier installation.
In this configuration, the dehumidifier installed inline with the central duct. Hence, we can fit in the main supply or central return duct. It means 100% air will pass through the dehumidifier always. Thus, we need to invest in a high capacity unit.
Also, if Air conditioner is off, then a dehumidifier will face pressure issues.
Parallel installation.
In this installation, the unit connected in parallel with one of the ducts. It means, intake of humid air and dry air discharge in the same duct. The unit connects parallel with supply or the return duct. Most importantly, we need to install damper at the outlet to avoid reverse airflow.
This type of duct mounted dehumidifier installation used when we have a common duct.
Cross installation.
In this configuration, inline dehumidifier installs between supply and return duct. That is to say, and the unit connects with cross-connection. A dehumidifier takes air from the return duct and discharges dry air into the return duct.
Also, the unit can connect between the supply duct and a dedicated return.
Independent connection.
We recommend this method of installation. In this arrangement, the unit not connected to any duct. It has its supply and the return duct. Put another way, it takes air from the room and releases dry air into the same room.
There are many advantages of this layout. Firstly, it does not depend on AC. In winter, many times we switch off AC. But, we need a dehumidifier all the time. When you connect the unit to AC ducting, and if AC is off, the dehumidifier faces issues. This issue gets overcome with this method.
